Where the You Matter Card Is Now: A Grassroots Update
The idea for the You Matter Card came after an unexpected encounter outside my favorite bakery, Gluten Free Epicurean. I met a young woman who was clearly vulnerable and asking for help. Something about her reminded me deeply of my sister, Eugenie. That moment stayed with me—it sparked a desire to create something simple, tangible, and stigma-free that could help people like her navigate toward services that might make a difference.
From that spark, the You Matter Card was born: a pocket-sized resource connecting people in Vancouver to mental health supports, housing services, crisis lines, and more.
With the generous help of my cousin Dan, who did the photography, and my sister Deborah—who, along with me, acted as a hand model—we brought the first visuals to life. I also leaned on talented developers from Fiverr to support the areas where my skills fell short.
I’m currently running this initiative solo—self-funded, self-managed, and driven by a strong belief in the power of community care.
Where We Are Now
- The website is live at youmattercard.org, featuring a downloadable version of the card and a short introductory video.
- The first physical cards have been printed and distributed to select locations.
- The CMHA/VCH Peer Navigator Program is the first confirmed host of the card.
- Outreach efforts are ongoing to a range of community organizations, including:
I remain hopeful that some of these connections will grow into lasting partnerships.
What’s Next
- Creating a social media presence to increase visibility and community engagement.
- Distributing flyers at community centres and public spaces across the city.
- Securing additional host locations to expand access to the card.
- Exploring funding opportunities to sustain and grow the initiative.
If you’re connected to a group or organization that might want to host the card—or if you’d simply like to support this work—please feel free to reach out. Even a kind word or a share can go a long way.
Thank you for believing in the power of showing someone they matter.
