Why I Made This Card
My name is André. I used to work in IT for the BC government. After experiencing an untreated mental illness, I left my job and began traveling. Over time, I fell into debt, my mental health declined, and I eventually became homeless.
I created the You Matter Card in memory of my sister Eugenie, who died from alcohol use disorder. I can’t speak to everything she was going through, but I know she struggled deeply. This card is for her, for others like her, and for anyone trying to help someone else with compassion—even when they’re not sure how.
Mission
The You Matter Card began with a simple, human moment—seeing someone in crisis and wanting to offer more than money: a reminder of worth, and a map toward help. Inspired by the life and loss of my sister Eugenie, and others like her who slipped through the cracks, this card is a guide for anyone climbing out of a hard place.
- No one should be reduced to their worst day.
- Kindness is most powerful when it’s practical.
- You don’t need power to make an impact—just a heart, and a card.
Let this be something you pass on—not with authority, but with solidarity.
